Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its current cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
