Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder States Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
One of the original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner Unilever stopped the launch for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that co-founded the company alongside his partner, disclosed how he plans to personally create the controversial flavor as part of an individual series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Founders and Corporate Owner
This latest development escalates the continuing conflict between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the British consumer goods corporation that acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders have claimed that the parent company and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Flavor becoming an Emblem of Solidarity
The entrepreneur stated through an Instagram video how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas regarding naming options and additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol of support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, which mirror the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Historical Activism plus Current Developments
Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company transferring the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales in disputed territories.
The new dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist dessert company that originally established in 2016 to support ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts and Upcoming Intentions
The founder revealed that he plans to develop other ice cream flavors that address issues that the company was prevented from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
This development comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down from the company recently, following decades with the organization, mentioning worries that the company's autonomy had been compromised following corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Ben Cohen commented that "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can actualise the social mission, the principles that established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
