We are analyzing video footage and photographs circulated this morning that purport to show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the location of where the images originated was based on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the video.
Locating other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
