McLaren Racing Points Finger at Rival Drivers for Piastri-Norris Collision
A wheel comes loose from the car of Norris after he crashed into fellow driver Oscar Piastri at the start of the United States Grand Prix sprint race.
McLaren F1 team executives Brown and Stella attributed rival drivers for the incident between Oscar Piastri and Norris at the beginning of the US GP sprint event.
Piastri, ahead of Norris in the standings by twenty-two points, made contact with his fellow McLaren driver after making contact with Sauber's Hulkenberg.
The collision eliminated both team drivers from the event, along with the Alonso, who was on the inside of Hulkenberg.
Team Executives Voice Frustration Over Incident
Brown, McLaren Racing's chief executive officer, commented to broadcasters that some of the driving at the front was "unprofessional", remarking: "Clearly Hulkenberg made contact with Oscar and he had no reason being where he was."
McLaren F1 team principal Stella stated: "The reaction is that we are disappointed that we didn't have the opportunity to compete."
"It is unexpected that some racers with a lot of experience fail to act with justful prudence. Enter the initial turn, ensure you don't damage other drivers and carry on."
McLaren clarified that the team principal was referring to both Hulkenberg and the Aston Martin driver.
Contrasting Views on the Incident
Nevertheless, 1996 world champion Hill, providing analysis for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he thought the Australian had not demonstrated enough awareness of the dangers of the first corner of an Formula 1 event when he decided to cut back to try to pass his teammate.
Piastri had a stronger launch than the Briton and at first competed on the outside on the ascending approach to the corner.
However he then moved inside in an attempt to get a advantage on his teammate on the way out, only to hit the Sauber driver.
Racer Comments After the Incident
Piastri said: "Less than perfect but I did not see what occurred, I attempted to cut back on Lando and we were both very far from the corner apex and then were struck and it sent me into Norris. A shame."
Norris commented: "I just was struck, right? I was not at fault. Behind us events unfolded and I just got unlucky and was struck because of it. I am unsure. I need to review a bit more thoroughly. It's more people behind just being a bit careless and we are the consequence of that."
Alonso said: "At one point I believed I was in the correct position on the inner side, but some vehicles came very fast from the outer side changing direction and then I was there in the middle."
The Sauber driver, who had earned a best qualifying fourth, said: "Major disappointment. All the good work from yesterday in the bin. Just chaotic."
"Oscar turned in pretty aggressively trying to get the undercut and exit of Turn One but I can't just disappear."
"I had Fernando attack on the inside and I couldn't see him any more. I aimed to leave space for him and then Piastri turned in and the contact was unavoidable."
Aftermath and Team Response
McLaren will analyze the incident with their drivers but not until the event weekend. Both cars needed extensive work before qualifying session at 22:00 BST on the weekend.
The team principal said: "In general displeased but we accept it, we are now focusing on fixing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will resume the event from there."
"We are in a strong position from our competitiveness point of view so I hope we have the opportunity to race, compete fairly and capitalise on our performance."
"The points are the most important thing, I don't want to talk about mal-intent, just prudence. A little more prudence would be beneficial for all involved."
Championship Implications
The sprint event was taken by Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who closed in on both team racers in the championship - he is now fifty-five points behind the Australian and thirty-three adrift of the Briton.
The team boss said: "The implication is what the maths show - we lost eight championship points with both racers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a very competitive car and two skilled drivers. We look forward to just some standard competition."
Verstappen said he was taking the title race one event at a time.
