Milei Statuette, Anyone? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause
Relinquishing unneeded presents could be considered slightly impolite – unless it's done in the proper manner.
A Philanthropic Sale
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell an estimated 270 gifts given to her by international figures while abroad. The diverse haul could include items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.
These items, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. The plan is to sold in a public auction by a Rome-based auction firm. A date has not been finalized, but the goal is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with all funds raised going to a selection of charitable causes.
Storage Room Holdings
The presents are currently stored in a repository on the third floor of the government headquarters. Sources state that Meloni is also intending to auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been sitting unused for years.
The full gift list remains officially released, but partial details were revealed earlier this year when a comprehensive document of official presents was reviewed by officials. The discussion centered on if a statutory cap on gift value was being respected. By law, a prime minister must declare presents exceeding €300.
A Global Assortment of Presents
Among the items:
- A scarf from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
- A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
- A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
- A electronic pad from the Ukrainian president.
- Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
- Various other items including cosmetics, a board, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the strangest gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," one might note.
Political Backdrop
Meloni has been credited, mostly from within her party, with garnering support from international counterparts and re-establishing Italy as a significant player on the world stage once again.
This charitable initiative represents a unconventional way to deal with the state presents that accumulate during a political career.
