The domestic football league local clash between one local team and their city rivals was called off ahead of kick-off on the weekend, following what authorities labeled as "crowd trouble and violent riots".
"Many of smoke bombs and pyrotechnic devices were thrown," law enforcement posted on social media, noting "this isn't a sporting event, this is chaos and major hostilities".
Twelve people and three police personnel were hurt, authorities reported, while nine people were detained and numerous others held for interrogation.
The disturbances come just a brief period after authorities in the UK stated that supporters of the team should not be allowed to be present at the international tournament fixture at the English club in the UK the following month because of safety concerns.
The local club criticised the game abandonment, claiming law enforcement of "getting ready for a war, not a game", particularly during meetings in the build-up to the highly-anticipated encounter.
"The alarming incidents near the arena and after the ill-considered and unacceptable decision to cancel the fixture only show that the law enforcement has assumed command over the game," the club stated officially.
The other team has declined to speak, except to confirm the match was cancelled.
The ruling by Birmingham's Safety Advisory Group to ban club followers from the Birmingham game on 6 November has sparked widespread criticism.
The British authorities has later announced it is seeking to cancel the ban and investigating what further support might be necessary to make certain the fixture can be held without incident.
Aston Villa notified their matchday stewards that they were not required to attend at the game, stating they understood that some "could be worried".
On the previous day, law enforcement stated it backed the ban and designated the fixture as "high risk" based on intelligence and earlier occurrences.
That included "serious fights and discrimination incidents" among Ajax and their supporters prior to a fixture in the Netherlands in November 2024, when over sixty individuals were taken into custody.
There have been demonstrations at several games over the situation in Gaza, such as when Israel competed against Norway and Italy in current international matches.
