The Details Known Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 lives were killed and more than 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.

The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
