The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a girl containing several human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate personas, all possessing their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy hospital, while other scenes show the main character navigating a desolate church.
A World of Individual Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The core mechanic involves controlling the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms where their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
