The Red Devils Set to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for United
The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated after she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major boost to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought further business:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
