The Reform UK leader Accuses Educators of ‘Indoctrinating Children’ on Race Issues
Nigel Farage has asserted that teachers would go on strike shortly after a success at the polls for his party, charging that they are “poisoning our kids” by telling students that black pupils are victims and Caucasian students are perpetrators.
During an event for a private US Christian college, the politician expressed his perspective on the UK education system, stating that the “Marxist left” had “taken over schooling”.
“I’m anticipating a walkout by educators very quickly after securing a victory,” Farage commented during a Q&A session.
“They are poisoning our kids. They instruct children to be ashamed of their country. They are telling little Johnny, who’s eight, who is black that he is oppressed and a white child of the same age that he is a perpetrator. They create division, instead of fostering unity. They promote this negative culture.”
In response to these assertions, Daniel Kebede rejected the idea that the education system was controlled by Marxists as “nonsense”. Kebede noted that industrial action must relate to educators’ working conditions, and questioned whether Reform would attack these immediately upon entering government.
“Farage has built his public life on coded rhetoric and now, similar to other figures, he is targeting educators and their unions for a fight,” the union leader said.
“I think that’s grossly irresponsible. I don’t – and nor does my union – advocate such divisive theories as he’s suggesting … If he were to lead the government he would undermine state services, particularly schooling … and the outcome would be catastrophic for education and children.”
Reform, which is leading the polls by a significant margin, has not set out much detail on a proposed education policy and seems not to have appointed an education spokesperson.
However, Farage’s remarks indicated the group would reform the educational framework. He said: “We have got a massive job with schooling – truly monumental. And, it won’t happen quickly; it will take us years, a long-term effort to reform.”
He stated that gen Z was more open to analytical thought, but millennials were “absolutely hopeless”.
Paying tribute to a conservative activist, he commented: “All I want education to do to teach critical thinking – to educate individuals that there are two points of view and they should decide for themselves as opposed to current practices where views are labeled good or bad. This is a huge undertaking in both Britain and America.”
The party has conflicted with the UK’s largest teaching union, after Kebede called the party “extremist and prejudiced” and dismissed Farage as “a cheap imitation”.
The politician has charged Kebede of being “a self-declared Marxist” … an individual intent that our children should be poisoned through education, their minds should be poisoned about everything to do with this country” and maintained that the union is trying to indoctrinate youth opposed to his party.
Roughly a million individuals are employed in education in the UK, with educators comprising half and the others teaching assistants and support staff. The leading teachers’ organization has hundreds of thousands of members.
Countrywide walkouts over educators’ salaries and work environment in 2023 caused widespread disruption in schools and extensive missed instruction for students.
At the US event, Farage also vowed to promote the online educational material of the institution in the UK. He stated such groups were “key to resistance”, noting: “I am serious. I will help garner hundreds of thousands, if not millions of young people to your online courses. I pledge this tonight and I will follow through.”
The college, a small private Christian college, provides complimentary classes. Its website states: “A scientific, literary, theological, political, and moral education is necessary for personal happiness and to perpetuate the blessings of freedom. The college furnishes these excellent programs for free to all who wish to learn.”
