Three Lions Coach Reveals His Vision: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

Ten years back, Anthony Barry was playing in League Two. Currently, his attention is fixed on helping Thomas Tuchel win the World Cup next summer. His path from athlete to trainer started as an unpaid coach with the youth team. He recalls, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he was hooked. He realized his calling.

Metoric Climb

Barry's progression is incredible. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he built a reputation with creative training and excellent people skills. His roles at clubs led him to top European clubs, plus he took on roles with national teams with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include stars like Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the “pinnacle” as he describes it.

“All begins with a vision … But I’m a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a methodical process that allows us for optimal success.”

Obsession with Details

Dedication, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour all the time, the coaching duo push hard at comfort zones. Their methods include mental assessments, a strategy for high temperatures for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights the England collective and dislikes phrases such as "break".

“It's not time off or a break,” he explains. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”

Greedy Coaches

The assistant coach says along with the manager as highly ambitious. “Our goal is to master every aspect of the game,” Barry affirms. “We strive to own the whole ground and that's our focus most of our time to. Our responsibility not just to keep up of the trends and to lead and create our own ones. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.

“We have 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We need to execute a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and we have to make it so clear in that period. It's about moving it from idea to information to know-how to performance.

“To build a methodology for effective use in the 50 days, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. When the squad is away, we need to foster connections among them. We must dedicate moments communicating regularly, we need to watch them play, understand them, connect with them. If we just use the 50 days, it's impossible.”

World Cup Qualifiers

Barry is preparing ahead of the concluding matches of World Cup qualifiers – versus Serbia in London and in Albania. They've already ensured a spot in the tournament with six wins out of six with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; quite the opposite. This is the time to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.

“The manager and I agree that the style of play should represent all the positives about the Premier League,” Barry explains. “The fitness, the flexibility, the robustness, the honesty. The national team shirt should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak and not body armour.

“To ensure it's effortless, we need to provide an approach that enables them to play freely like they do every week, that resonates with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They need to reduce hesitation and focus more on action.

“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach at both ends of the pitch – starting moves deep, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared these days. They can organize – defensive shapes. Our aim is to increase tempo in that central area.”

Passion for Progress

Barry’s hunger to get better is relentless. When he studied for the top coaching badge, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, as his cohort included stars such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he sought out tough situations available to him to practise giving them. Including a prison in his home city of Liverpool, where he coached prisoners in a football drill.

He earned his license as the best in his year, and his dissertation – about dead-ball situations, in which he examined 16,154 throw-ins – got into print. Frank was one of those won over and he recruited the coach to his team at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it was telling that Chelsea removed nearly all assistants while keeping Barry.

Lampard’s successor at Stamford Bridge became Tuchel, and shortly after, they claimed the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued under Graham Potter. However, when Tuchel returned at Munich, he got Barry out from Chelsea and back alongside him. English football's governing body view them as a partnership akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
