A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in Melbourne.
Historic Comeback to the Australian Courts
Tournament officials announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.
Gearing Up for the Summer Swing
The tennis star had previously revealed in November her intention to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, two weeks prior to the Melbourne event. The Australian Open added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the action begins at the main venue.
Her most recent visit in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.
"I am thrilled to return in Australia and eagerly anticipating competing during the summer season," Williams stated. "I have experienced so many unforgettable moments there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a place that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Williams' career statistics at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will represent the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the main draw.

The tournament indicated that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the record previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the first round at the venue in 2015.
