When an teenage creates Real Madrid history in a key Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to secure a last eight place.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and determination he brought to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, each day you head to training and each day you have a game," said Pitarch following his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."

Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is extremely dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize fans might be astonished to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"He will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

Focus on the Future
